Write content skills for Content Engine

Teach every Content Engine writer and reviewer your voice, rules, and hard limits with content skills.

Content skills are the guidance every Content Engine writer and reviewer follows: Studio Genie, content briefs, the editorial review, content scoring, and the Content Agent workflow task. Each skill is a markdown file. The body holds prose guidance (voice, structure, AEO rules, anti-patterns), and optional frontmatter holds the limits GTM Engine enforces in code.

Where to Find Them

Go to Content Engine → Settings. The page lists your organization's content skills, lets you add one from a preset or from scratch, and shows a Combined Style Guide Preview for any asset type, so you can see exactly what applies to an article versus a social post.

Content skills are regular skills tagged content-engine, so they also show up on the general Skills settings page.

Start From a Preset

Presets are ready-made skills you can copy and edit:

  • Brand Voice & Operator Tone
  • Long-Form SEO & AEO Article Rules
  • LinkedIn & Social Post Voice
  • FAQ & Comparison Page Structure
  • Banned Phrases & Anti-Slop Gate
  • Customer Proof & Call Evidence Rules

If your organization has no content skills yet, these defaults apply automatically.

Frontmatter Reference

Frontmatter goes between --- lines at the top of the skill. Every key is optional.

---

max_word_count: 1800
reading_level: grade 10-12
meta_title_max: 60
meta_description_max: 155

# Long-form voice

Lead with the answer. Use one concrete example per section.
KeyWhat it does
applies_toAsset types this skill applies to. Omit it to apply to every type.
max_word_countBody length cap.
reading_levelFree-text reading level, such as grade 8 or industry-technical.
meta_title_max / meta_description_maxSEO character limits. Going over is a must-fix editorial finding.
allow_em_dashesfalse bans em dashes in the editorial review. Banned is the default.
do_say / do_not_sayPreferred and banned phrases. Banned phrases fail the editorial review.
target_personas / default_personasPersonas suggested for new assets.
default_segments / default_distribution_channelsSegment and channel suggestions for new assets.
target_audience / brand_voiceOne-line audience and tone descriptions.

Invalid frontmatter, such as a non-numeric max_word_count or an unknown key, is rejected when you save, with the field that needs fixing.

How Skills Combine

For each piece of content, GTM Engine uses every active content skill whose applies_to matches the asset type (or that has no applies_to):

  • Prose is combined in priority order.
  • Word lists (do_say, do_not_say, personas, segments, channels) are merged.
  • Numeric limits use the strictest value. Two skills with max_word_count: 2000 and 250 give 250.
  • If any matching skill sets allow_em_dashes: false, em dashes are banned.

The Content Agent task can also exclude specific content skills or pin extra skills for a single workflow.
